How to Brush Your Dog’s Teeth: 8 Easy Steps

Good oral hygiene is not only important for us humans. Keeping your dog’s teeth and gums clean is extremely important for their overall health. Poor dog oral health can lead to infections, pain, and serious health problems. And it is never fun for pups to have their teeth pulled.

Brushing your dog’s teeth regularly is one of the best ways to keep their gums healthy and prevent plaque and tartar buildup. As a bonus, regular dog dental care also helps eliminate bad breath.

Follow these 8 simple steps to keep your pup’s teeth clean and improve their oral health.

Let’s get started!

1. Gather Your Supplies

You will need:

  • Toothbrush

  • Dog toothpaste

  • Clean rag (to help clean up any messes during the process)

You can use a dog toothbrush or a child’s toothbrush. Just make sure the bristles are soft so they do not hurt your dog’s gums.

Only use toothpaste made specifically for dogs. Human toothpaste can be toxic for dogs.

2. Rinse Off  the Toothbrush

Give the toothbrush a good rinse to make sure it is clean and ready to brush your dog’s teeth.

3. Add a Small Amount of Toothpaste

Add dog toothpaste to the toothbrush before bringing in your pup. This makes the process easier and keeps everything prepared.

4. Let Your Pup Smell and Taste the Toothpaste

Now that everything is ready, bring your dog into the area where you will be brushing their teeth.

This is an important step in helping your dog feel comfortable. Let them smell and taste the toothpaste so brushing their teeth becomes a positive experience.

Be patient and never force your dog. If this is your first time brushing their teeth, it may take multiple sessions for them to feel comfortable.

5. Find a Comfortable Position

Choose a position that works best for both you and your dog. Smaller dogs may sit comfortably on your lap, while larger dogs can sit or stand on the floor. Comfort helps make brushing easier and safer.

6. Begin Brushing

Start brushing at the front of your dog’s mouth and slowly work toward the back teeth. Back teeth can be harder to reach, so take your time.

Use small circular motions to brush your dog’s teeth. Add more toothpaste if needed. The first few brushing sessions may be short, and that is perfectly okay. Consistency and patience are key to long-term dog dental health.

7. Clean Up and Put Away Supplies

Rinse the toothbrush thoroughly and remove any leftover toothpaste from the bristles. Tap off excess water.

Store your dog dental care supplies safely so your pup cannot access them later.

8. Give Your Pup Praise

Praise your dog for a job well done. Positive reinforcement helps your dog associate tooth brushing with a good experience. You can even do a quick breath check and feel proud of your effort.

Extra Tips for Dog Oral Health

If your dog struggles with brushing, try these alternatives while continuing to work toward regular brushing:

Dog oral rinse: A faster alternative to brushing. Lift your dog’s lip and apply the rinse along the gum line on both sides.

Dental chew toys: Chew toys designed for dog dental health can help reduce plaque and support healthy gums. Always supervise your dog while they chew.

And that’s it!

Now you can enjoy cuddles with your pup without worrying about bad breath.
